Project Overview

The City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works (DPW) is redesigning S. 2nd Street from W. Michigan Street to W. Maple Street to improve safety, comfort, and accessibility for everyone using the street.

Project goals:

  • Reduce driver speeding
  • Make streets safer and more enjoyable places to walk and bike
  • Contribute to the City's "Vision Zero" goal to eliminate all traffic deaths by 2037
  • Contribute to the Mayor's goal of 50 new miles of protected bikeways completed or in progress by 2026

Proposed improvements include:

  • Two-way bike lane with concrete protection on the west side of the street
  • Connection to the KK River Trail via on-street connection along E. Maple Street
  • Traffic calming and pedestrian crossing improvements at key intersections
  • Landscaping, green infrastructure, and median islands in some locations

Please note: This project has been split into two phases!

Phase 1: W. Maple St. to W. Florida St. (currently in design, construction 2027)

Phase 2: W. Florida St. to W. Michigan St. (schedule to be determined, anticipated by 2029)
