Project Overview
The City of Milwaukee is planning to rehabilitate the 35th Street Bridge over W. Pierce Street, the Menomonee River, Canal Street, and the Canadian Pacific Railroad.
The existing bridge was constructed in 1933. The bridge deck was replaced in 1976, with a rehabilitation in 2000-01 that including bridge painting, joint replacement, and a new asphalt overlay. Improvements to the 1933 bridge will be made to existing structural components. The work will meet all state and federal requirements, and will be completed in two phases.
Phase 1 Rehabilitation work includes [Construction Spring 2029 - Fall 2029]:
- Repair or replacement of deteriorated structural steel located on the superstructure and substructure
- A portion of the deck will be removed at each joint to allow replacement of all expansion joints on the bridge
- Bearing pads will be replaced at the abutments
- Sandblasting corroded steel bearings
- Concrete surface repairs and epoxy injection of cracks to exterior surfaces of abutments and bent bases
Phase 2 Rehabilitation work includes [Construction Spring 2030 - Fall 2030]:
- Removing the existing asphalt overlay and membrane
- Replacing the asphalt overlay and membrane
- Concrete repairs to existing concrete deck, sidewalk, and railing
- Maintenance and adjustment of floor drains
The project is funded through the WisDOT Local Bridge Program with 80% federal and 20% City funding.
