Project Overview

The City of Milwaukee is rehabilitating the 72nd Street Bridge over Honey Creek. The bridge was originally constructed in 1954 and now needs some well-deserved restoration. The main areas of deterioration for this structure are the interior of the culvert cells, and the exterior wingwalls and headwalls. The rehabilitation will include:

  • Surface repairs and epoxy crack repairs to the culvert cell walls, wingwalls and headwalls
  • Removing, repainting and reinstalling the exisiting bridge railing and fence

Additional items of work include:

  • Fence removal and replacement
  • Tree removal, excavation and restoration

Project Goals

  • Rehabilitate the existing structure
  • Provide aesthetic improvements to the bridge railing

Construction Impacts

The bridge will remain open to two-way motor vehicle traffic throughout the project; however, no on-street parking will be allowed in the project area.

The west bridge sidewalk will remain closed during the duration of the project and pedestrians will utilize a detour on the east side of the bridge. A temporary pedestrian crossing will be installed south of the bridge to allow people walking to cross from the west sidewalk to the east. North of the bridge, pedestrians will utilize the existing intersection of S. 72nd Street and W. Lakefield Drive to cross over to the open, east sidewalk.

Funding

The project is funded through the WisDOT Local Bridge Program and includes 100% federal funding.
