Project Overview

Clementina Castro Park, formerly known as the 4th and Mineral site, is the smallest park in Milwaukee’s portfolio, but it plays an important role within the Walker’s Point neighborhood. Located at a highly visible roundabout and surrounded by schools, community organizations, and local institutions, the space is deeply connected to the everyday life of the near south side.

In spring 2026, the park was officially renamed to honor Clementina Castro, a dedicated advocate for social justice and a key figure in Milwaukee’s Welfare Rights Movement. A close collaborator of Father James Groppi and founder of La Causa Daycare, Clementina focused her work on supporting low-income families, particularly women and children, and expanding access to essential services.

The renaming effort was led by her family, including her son Tomas, alongside County Supervisor Juan Miguel Martinez and Alderman José G. Pérez. It reflects both her lasting impact and the strong sense of cultural identity and community pride that defines the surrounding neighborhood.
