Pre-Construction Public Meeting
In collaboration with VIA CDC, join us for a pre-construction public meeting on Wednesday, March 18, 2026 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Mitchell Park Domes.
Project Overview
The City of Milwaukee, in partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), is rebuilding 2.6-miles of W. National Avenue (WIS 59) between S. 39th and S. 1st streets.
National Avenue is currently an urban 4-lane, undivided principal arterial roadway and connecting highway. The rebuild consists of improving safety measures for all modes of transportation, including walking and biking.
Construction for the project will take place over three years in three separate segments:
- 2026 - 39th to 27th Street
- 2027 - 11th to 1st Street
- 2028 - 27th to 11th Street
Final Design
The project will implement modern transportation features, improving safety for all modes. Improvements will include:
- Reduced number of travel lanes from 4-lanes to 2-lanes between S. 33rd Street and S. 1st Street
- Addition of raised protected bike track
- Maintain MCTS transit operations and improve bus stop features
- Addition of safety features for people walking, like curb extensions, raised crosswalks, flashing beacons, and high visibility crosswalk markings
- Replacing all pedestrian curb ramps meet ADA standards
- Improving street lighting and updating traffic signals
- Replacing all roadside pavement, curb, sidewalks, and driveway approaches, as well as replacing storm sewers at select locations
