Project Overview

The Accessible Intersections for All project is funded by the Safe Streets for All (SS4A) federal grant program. The project will make improvements to 23 intersections along five corridors throughout the City of Milwaukee. The corridors include:

  • W. Capitol Drive
  • W. Atkinson Avenue
  • S. César Chávez Drive / S. 16th Street
  • W. Greenfield Avenue
  • W. Forest Home Avenue

The purpose of the project is to improve intersection safety for all users, with priority for people walking and biking, and improve accessibility by ensuring that intersections are accessible for all, including people with disabilities.

Proposed improvements include:

  • Installation of Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS) at all 23 intersections
  • Replacement of curb ramps that do not meet the Americans with Disabilities (ADA) requirements
  • Improve pavement markings and signage
  • Installation of pinned-on concrete islands at some intersections
  • Installation of median refuge space at some intersections

Depending on funding, additional improvements at some intersections may include:

  • Installation of raised concrete crosswalks
  • Installation of curb extensions
  • Closure of legs on complex intersections with more than 5 legs
