Project Overview

The City of Milwaukee is rehabilitating the Water Street Bascule Bridge over the Milwaukee River. Rehabilitation work includes painting, joint replacement, sidewalk plate replacement, and traffic gate upgrades. During rehabilitation, the roadway will be closed to allow the new structure to be painted all at once. This will also provide equipment and materials to be stored in the work zone.

Project Goal

The goal of this project is to extend the life of the existing structure until replacement is necessary.

Facts

  • The existing bridge was built in 1987.
  • The bridge is 224 feet long, 48 feet wide with a 48 foot roadway.
  • About 12,800 motorists travel over the bridge per day.

Funding

Estimated cost is $3.2 million dollars. State aid will fund 80% of the construction costs and the City of Milwaukee will pay 20%. We do not anticipate assessments to property owners at this time.
