Key Information

Increasing the adoption of electric vehicles will reduce Milwaukee’s greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming, reduce local air pollution, create good-paying local jobs, and increase consumer choice and convenience.

This project is administered by the City of Milwaukee Environmental Collaboration Office (ECO). In 2025, the City will select a private-sector partner to finance the local funding share, build the system, operate it, and maintain it. Electric vehicle owners who charge at the system will pay to use it.

To apply for the grant funding, ECO completed a Milwaukee Preliminary Electric Vehicle Readiness Plan, which calls for public chargers at 53 locations. 47 sites will be within the City of Milwaukee and up to 6 sites will be in neighboring communities in Milwaukee County. Milwaukee Public Library locations are first priority for construction.

    • Federal Funding from U.S. DOT: $15 million
    • Local Funding from private sector: $3.7 million
    • Total Project Funding: $18.7 million
  • Charger Location Criteria:
    • Locations must be open to the public
    • Site must dedicate at least 4 charging spots per site for electric vehicle parking only
    • Site must have adequate electrical power
    • Construction at the site cannot create new environmental or historic preservation issues
    • At least 40% of the sites must be in disadvantaged communities
    • People would want to spend at least 30 minutes while charging
