Process Overview

We’ve set a new vision for Milwaukee’s housing through an update to the City’s Comprehensive Plan. Now, we’re updating the Zoning Code to help bring that vision to life. A Zoning Code update process is a very technical process. Community input is valued as we draft new detailed technical zoning standards.

What is a Zoning Code?

Zoning is the set of legal rules made by local governments to control how land is used and developed. Every property in Milwaukee is assigned a zoning classification. A Zoning Code provides the rules for what can be done in terms of land uses, what can be built, the size a building can be, and where buildings can be put on the land.

What’s Changing? [COMING SOON!]

We’re updating parts of the housing-related Zoning Code text to improve the rules for new development. These changes won’t affect which properties belong to which zoning districts, but they will update the rules to support the vision in the Housing Element of the City’s Comprehensive Plan.
